The national curriculum for design and technology aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world
- build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users
- critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others
- understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
Design and Technology Intent
At North Park Primary School, it is our intention that learning in Design & Technology enables children to exercise their creativity and imagination through the designing and making process. We seek to inspire all children through a broad range of practical experiences to enable them to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. The curriculum will allow pupils to:
- create innovative designs for a range of products
- solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts
- link their learning to practical and relevant understanding of the place of design and technology in their everyday lives.
The DT curriculum provides a coherently planned sequence of termly learning, adopted and adapted from Kapow, to ensure a progressive development of knowledge and skills. The curriculum is dynamic and is regularly adjusted to coincide with the needs and views of learners.
The DT curriculum:
- engages children and allows them to learn and build a repertoire of skills, knowledge and understanding by developing and creating a range of products.
- provides the opportunity for children to acquire, practise and develop essential practical skills, such as cutting, sewing and joining
- advances confidence, thinking and problem solving
- allows children to understand and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating to their future lives.
- provides children with the opportunity to individually and collaboratively build, critique, evaluate and test their ideas
- introduces and emphasises an understanding of key technological vocabulary.
This learning builds upon the foundations laid down in Early Years, furthering each child’s development of their following fundamentals;
- Physical development
- Expressive Arts and Design
- Understanding the world
Learning in Design & Technology at North Park contributes to the education of the ‘whole child’ and is a core aspect of our motto, ‘Achieving and growing, together in friendship’.
